Eagles long snapper Charley Hughlett, placed on Injured Reserve on Tuesday with an undisclosed injury, will be out “a couple months,” his agent tweeted on Wednesday morning.
Brett Tessler revealed on social media that Hughlett underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a core muscle injury suffered in the win over the Bucs in Tampa on Sunday.
He said Hughlett “will be back playing within a couple of months.”
The regular season is over in three months.
Hughlett never missed a game in his first nine NFL seasons.
The Eagles signed former Bengals long snapper Cal Adomitis on Tuesday to replace Hughlett.
Hughlett is in his first year with the Eagles after spending 10 years with the Browns. He replaced Rick Lovato, who was the Eagles’ long snapper from the middle of 2016 through last year. Lovato is now with the Chargers.
The Eagles signed a different long snapper – Christian Johnstone – when Hughlett missed a week of practice early in training camp. Adomitis was still on the Bengals’ roster until he was released on Aug. 2.
Hughlett, 35, never missed a game in his first nine years, playing in 149 of a possible 149 games. But he was limited to five games last year after suffering a rib injury and now is out indefinitely with another injury.
The Eagles used only three long snappers during the 25-year period from 2000 through last year – Mike Bartrum from 2000 through late 2006, Jon Dorenbos from late 2006 through early 2016 and Lovato from early 2016 through the end of last year.
Those three played in 439 of a possible 439 games. On Sunday, the Eagles will use their third long snapper in six games.
