Atlanta moved up slightly after Sunday’s win over the Washington Commanders.

The Atlanta Falcons are walking into their bye week with a 2-2 record. They looked competitive in three of their four games thus far, with the outlier being the 30-0 drubbing at the hands of the Carolina Panthers in Week 3. However, even after that loss, the Falcons were still ranked above the Panthers in Pro Football Focus’ Week 4 power rankings.

Based on how the two teams fared last weekend, PFF appears to have made the right call. The Falcons bounced back with a win over the Washington Commanders in Week 4 and were rewarded with a little bump in the latest batch of power rankings.

Atlanta moved up three spots this week to 18th, while the Commanders saw no change in their spot despite the loss. The Falcons are now just eight spots behind Tampa Bay and pulling away from both New Orleans and Carolina. Here’s what PFF’s Thomas Valentine had to say about the team in his Week 5 power rankings:

The Falcons had to bounce back from an embarrassing shutout by the Carolina Panthers in Week 3, and they did with a 34-27 win against the Commanders. The offense played better, especially the Michael Penix Jr. and Drake London connection. Penix hit London eight times for 110 yards and a touchdown, with London compiling an excellent 91.3 overall PFF grade. – Thomas Valentine, Pro Football Focus

The Falcons’ next two opponents after their bye are the first-ranked Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49ers, who sit at No. 8 in Pro Football Focus’ Week 5 power rankings. If Atlanta can manage a win against either of those teams, its a strong indication as to where the team is currently.

One undeniably bright spot for the Falcons is the development of their rookie draft class. Not only have the team’s two first-round edge rushers made an immediate impact, but safety Xavier Watts was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for September.

Running back Bijan Robinson was also awarded on Thursday, taking home the NFC Offensive Player of the Month. Robinson has racked up 584 total yards over the first four games.
