Friday saw a slightly different course for the Washington Commanders.

Usually, the team works out in Ashburn and then flies to their road destination. However, this week, the plan was for the Commanders to fly out to California on Thursday. Thus, on Friday, with the help of USC and the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Commanders conducted a light practice in L.A. in preparation for their Sunday Week 5 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Quinn discussed trying to make the week as natural as possible, focusing on Friday. He explained to the media that the Commanders practiced in Ashburn and then flew out on Thursday. The Commanders’ head coach then stated that the team held team meetings earlier that morning and then had their usual practice at the Coliseum. Quinn then expressed that the team will have its usual walk-through practice on Saturday, as it usually does.

As usual, Quinn used Friday to announce who the game-day captains would be on Sunday. On offense, the Commanders’ captain will be receiver Deebo Samuel. The defensive captain will be defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, while the captain representing the special teams units will be running back Jeremy McNichols.

Samuel has only run the ball seven times this season, but he has been successful 85.7 percent of the time. He has picked up two first downs, a touchdown, with that 19-yard run being his longest thus far. He’s gained 46 rushing yards on those seven carries, averaging 6.6 yards a carry.

Through four games, Samuel leads the Commanders in receiving targets (27), receptions (22), receiving yards (204), first downs (9), receptions per game (5.5), receiving yards per game (51.0), yards from scrimmage (250) and rushing/receiving touchdowns (3). Unfortunately, Samuel has been nursing an injured heel this week, sitting out practice in the hope that he could recover enough for Sunday. Friday, the Commanders said he is ready to go.

Kinlaw came to Washington this year after only one year with the Jets and has played well inside. Kinlaw’s numbers have not been impressive, but coaches have been pleased with how Kinlaw is plugging the middle for the Commanders. Thus far, Kinlaw has recorded eight tackles (five solo, three assisted). He has also added three tackles for a loss and two QB hits.

McNichols has only carried the ball ten times, all the while picking up five first downs. His 106 yards rushing means he is averaging 10.6 a carry. Against the Raiders, he seemed to stop, broke a tackle, and then burst through the middle of the Raiders’ defense, sprinting 60 yards for a touchdown.

“Three real guys, we’re pumped,” said Quinn. “We hit on the competitiveness all week, and they certainly fit to that. So, hit the ‘team’ all week, complimentary ball, I thought through a good week, and today was the culmination of that. Made sure we hit all the spots we wanted to hit, so we’re ready to get rockin’.”
