Masters’ mother wants the woman who took the headband to return it to her son
The 10-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan who had Patrick Mahomes’ headband swiped out of his hands is speaking out.
“I just want that band back really bad,” Joey Masters told Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV on Monday, Sept. 29. The swiper in question is a woman who was dubbed “Kansas City Karen” after she pried the memento away from him as Mahomes met with fans after the Chiefs beat the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 21.

He recalled the incident to the station — and how the woman, later identified as Nina Miller, took the game-worn item.
“Patrick Mahomes walked over to me, locked eyes with me, tries to give me his headband,” Masters, who was celebrating his birthday that day, said. “And the woman just swoops in and snatches it from me.”
In a viral video shared on social media, Miller, who was wearing Giants gear, was seen taking the headband out of the boy’s hands.
Miller, a mother, bragged about getting the headband in a lengthy video on TikTok explaining herself.

“It was such a great day,” Mindy Masters told KCTV. “The players were amazing with us, the fans were, and just to have one person swoop in and take that from him is heartbreaking for a mother to watch.”
In a second TikTok days later, Miller dialed down her excitement about getting the headband.
“I just want to talk to you guys for one minute from my heart,” Miller said. “At the game, with all the noise and all the excitement, I honestly thought that Pat Mahomes was giving me the headband. I reached for it without thinking.”
Miller added that she “felt horrible” about the outcome.

“I’m sorry that I ruined your moment. You should have had your moment for your birthday,” she told Masters via the video, and then asked viewers to connect her to the boy so that she can give the item back.
It is unclear if the two parties have communicated, but Mindy Masters echoed the same feelings another parent had after a woman in Miami stole a home run ball meant for his son during a Phillies-Marlins game last month.
“I don’t want her to get hate mail, don’t want her to get death threats,” Mindy said. “Just give the child his headband back.”
