If a fortune teller told the 49ers back in August that they would have no rushing touchdowns and no interceptions through five games to start the 2025 NFL season, the team probably wouldn’t expect the record it has now.

Instead, a resilient San Francisco squad has jumped out to a 4-1 start despite just that, setting the team up nicely for when those facets of its game eventually do come around.

But that very rarely is the case if you go off the historical data, as pointed out by Josh Dubow of the Associated Press:

The #49ers are 1 of 2 teams since at least 1940 to start season 4-1 or better despite 0 TD runs.

The 49ers are 1 of 3 teams since at least 1940 to start season 4-1 or better despite 0 INTs on D.

The 49ers are only team (regardless of record) since at least 1940 to have 0 TD…

Not only are the 49ers just one of several teams to start 4-1 without a rushing touchdown or interception, but they also are the only team since at least 1940 — ever — to not record either through the first five games of an NFL season.

Wild stuff, especially for a team that’s known for its rushing attack with superstar Christian McCaffrey in the backfield and a vaunted defense again led by Robert Saleh.

In addition to their status as the league’s only team remaining without a rushing touchdown this season, the 49ers also are ranked No. 29 in rushing yards per game (85.2), No. 31 in yards per rush (3.1) and tied for No. 28 in rushing first downs per game (5.0). Still, San Francisco’s offense isn’t struggling by any means overall, with 375.8 yards per game (No. 5 in NFL), 23.0 first downs per game (No. 3) and 26.8 pass completions per game (No. 2).

Even though McCaffrey hasn’t run the ball into the end zone yet, the dual-threat running back has caught passes for touchdowns and has finished with more receiving than rushing yards in each of the 49ers’ first five games.

And while the 49ers’ defense has had several interception opportunities slip through its grasp this season, the unit is doing more than enough to keep opposing teams off the board and San Francisco on top.

For now, that’s good enough. But coach Kyle Shanahan and Saleh certainly hope to add those two stats to the sheet very soon.
