After the Arizona Cardinals lost 22-21 to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at State Farm Stadium on a last-second field goal, head coach Jonathan Gannon refused to peg the loss on any one play in particular, even though there was one that stood out.

“It’s never about one play,” he said, when answering a question about what he said to running back Emari Demercado after his end zone fumble that would have given the Cardinals a 28-6 lead, which became only a 21-12 lead after Tennessee took over.

Kyler Murray said after the game that they should have had at least 31 points, and this is true.

While maybe it wasn’t about just one play, the game actually came down to three Cardinals miscues.

3 huge mistakes cost the Cardinals – Mistake No. 1

This came on the Cardinals’ first drive of the second half. They had driven down the field and gotten to the Tennessee 20. At minimum, they should have come away with three points and made the score 24-6. They had burned nearly eight minutes off the clock.

Instead, there was a miscommunication on the snap. That’s all that Murray described it after the game.

Center Hjalte Froholdt snapped the ball when Murray was not ready. It hit Murray in the facemask and bounced away. He never had a chance. Dre’Mont Jones pounced on the ball for the takeaway.

So what happened?

Well, while Murray only said it was a miscommunication, right guard Jon Gaines stood up and pointed to the defensive line, seemingly like he though that someone jumped. Perhaps Froholdt snapped the ball trying to get the offside penalty. There was no flag and instead of getting at least three points, the got none.

Mistake No. 2: Emari Demercado’s fumble

Here is the play:

On third-and-one at their own 28-yard line, Demercado took the handoff and burst through the line into open field to the end zone. However, rather than running through the end zone, he dropped the ball as if he had scored just before he did. The ball went out the back of the end zone. Instead of a 28-6 lead (even with the first mistake), it was 21-6 and the Titans got the ball at their 20. They scored a touchdown (and missed the extra point) on the ensuing possession, making it 21-12. It was a 13-point swing.

If there was one play that cost the Cardinals, it was that one. It was a 13-point play in a game where they lost by one, and it was an inexcusable mistake.

Mistake No. 3 – the crazy interception-turned-TD

This play is really just incredibly unlucky, although there was a mistake by Dadrion Taylor-Demerson.

Here is the crazy play:

With the Titans threatening down 21-12, Mack Wilson tips Cam Ward’s pass and Taylor-Demerson intercepts it. However, after he goes to the ground and isn’t touched, he lost the ball, so it was a live ball. Cornerback Kei’Trel tried to get it, but he actually ended up kicking it into the end zone, where Titans receiver Tyler Lockett recovered it for a touchdown.

Instead of getting the ball back up 21-12, it was then 21-19.

After that, the Cardinals couldn’t pick up a first down, and the defense couldn’t keep the Titans out of field-goal range, where Joey Slye made the game-winning kick to win it as the game ended.

What a mess.
