MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Ladd-Peebles Stadium was the site of a big football game matching two historically black colleges and universities Saturday.
Jackson State University and Alabama A&M University met again for the Gulf Coast Challenge in Mobile.
Since its inception, the event has grown into one of the premier HBCU football classics in the nation — a celebration of history, pride, and championship tradition.
Game related events have been going for several days, including luncheons, a career fair, and concerts. On Saturday, fans were proud to show who they were rooting for during the Gulf Coast Challenge’s Ultimate HBCU Experience.
And after several days of events, Alabama A&M and Jackson State took the field at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The game, which included in a number of athletes from Mobile and Baldwin counties, was close through the first quarter, with Jackson State taking an early 10-7 lead and they wouldn’t look back from there, outscoring A&M 23-3 in the second quarter to take a 33-10 lead into halftime.
Both teams traded touchdowns at the start of the third quarter. But Jackson took a 43-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Jackson added two more touchdowns late to put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs.
Jackson State went on to beat Alabama A&M, 57-24, giving the Tigers their fourth straight Gulf Coast Challenge win against the Bulldogs.
Jackson State moves to 4-1 on the season while Alabama A&M drops to 3-3 on the year.
