AROUND THE SHIELD — Rashid Shaheed saw the one-on-one coverage against a safety, sold a fake across the field, and then broke free into the open field before connecting with Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler on an 87-yard touchdown.
The rest — and New Orleans’ winless start to the season — was history.
The former Weber State star caught four passes for a game-high 114 yards, including that 87-yard score in the second quarter, to help New Orleans rally for its first win, 26-14, of the 2025 NFL season Sunday over the New York Giants.
After opening 0-4, this one felt different, Shaheed admitted.
“It feels good to come into the locker room to music, with everybody smiling and dancing,” he told reporters at the podium. “That’s what we work hard for. It all paid off this week.”
Former Roy High and Corner Canyon quarterback Jaxson Dart threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in his second start for the Giants (1-4), including a 15-yard strike that gave New York a 14-3 lead to open the second quarter.
It was a familiar feeling for the Saints, who hadn’t held a lead at any point in a game since Week 1.
But after Blake Grupe pulled back a 53-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14-6, Shaheed made New Orleans forget about the deficit with an unseen type of touchdown run less than two minutes later.
The fourth-year receiver hit 21.72 miles per hour on his touchdown scamper, helping to kick start a 23-0 run in what would be the fastest speed recorded by an offensive touchdown through the league’s first five weeks, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats.
The TV broadcast recorded it as 22.72 miles per hour, for what it’s worth.
“We’ll go with that one,” Shaheed said with a laugh. “TV’s right.
“I feel like we’ve been waiting on a play like that to hit for the last few weeks,” he added. “When the opportunity came, we executed and that’s always a great feeling. I feel like it built momentum the rest of the game for the offense.”
