The Seattle Seahawks were already missing three key defensive players heading Sunday’s Week 5 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And during their nail-biting 38-35 loss to the Bucs, two more defensive players sustained injuries.
Instant Reaction: Seahawks fall to Bucs 38-35 on game-ending FG
Here’s what Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said about the statuses of those players during his weekly appearance Monday morning on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk.
• Macdonald said edge rusher Derick Hall could miss “a couple games” with an oblique injury that he suffered on Sunday. Macdonald hinted that Seattle’s Week 8 bye could factor into Hall’s timetable and whether the team places him on injured reserve, which would require him to miss at least four games.
“It looks like he might miss this (next) game, maybe a couple games with his oblique,” Macdonald said. “So we got to work through the severity of that and … just what that means timetable-wise. I know we’ve got the bye coming up here in a few weeks.”
• Macdonald said the team is “hopeful” that four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Demarcus Lawrence can return to practice this week. Lawrence suffered a quad injury during Seattle’s Week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
• Macdonald said two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon was getting imaging on his knee. Witherspoon missed Weeks 2 and 3, then returned to play every defensive snap in Week 4 before missing Sunday’s game.
“I think he’s getting imaged as we speak, so we’ll still figure that out,” Macdonald said. “Hopefully, we get him back. We’ll see.”
• Macdonald seemed to indicate there’s a chance Pro Bowl safety Julian Love could return to practice this week from his hamstring injury. Love missed Week 3, then returned to play every defensive snap in Week 4 before missing Sunday’s game.
“Sounds like we’re going to be working through this all week,” Macdonald said. “So I’m not sure what his practice availability is on Wednesday or Thursday.”
• Macdonald didn’t have an update on cornerback Riq Woolen, who exited Sunday’s game with a concussion.
