Next-man-up mentality fuels Detroit Lions as injuries mount ahead of SNF vs. Chiefs, HC Dan Campbell says

  • October 7, 2025

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised his team’s performance after their recent win, highlighting strong efforts from both the defense and offense across all three phases of the game.

“Defensively, four of 11 on third down, 85 yards rushing, only gave up four explosives,” said Campbell. “Three takeaways plus a safety. A sudden change stopped after the turnover was big on defense.”

Offensively, Campbell noted the team’s efficiency in the red zone, converting all five opportunities into touchdowns, excluding a four-minute drive at the end.

“We had 171 yards of yards after catch, which is huge,” Campbell said. “Most of that was Saint and Leaporta, but everybody had a hand in it.”

Special teams also contributed significantly, with Campbell praising Jack Fox‘s returns that set up scoring opportunities and Bates’ improved kickoffs, which aided coverage units.

Campbell highlighted individual performances, including Aidan Hutchinson and Alex Anzalone on defense, Al-Quadin Muhamad, Terrion Arnold, Rock Ya-Sin, and Brian Branch, as well as Sam LePorta, Jared Goff, and Jameson Williams on offense.

Campbell noted Goff’s high-level, efficient play and his role in play-calling.

“J Mo didn’t have high production in catches or targets, but his blocking was outstanding in the run game,” Campbell said. “He found another way to help us produce.”

When asked about Williams’ impact away from the ball, Campbell explained how he draws defensive attention, which helps open up opportunities for teammates like LePorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

“He gets a lot of attention put his way,” Campbell said. “They don’t want him to go over their head. He helped in other ways and was physical in the run game.”

Campbell discussed the defense’s weekly practice of watching turnovers from other teams to learn new techniques and emphasize aggressive play.

Regarding Arnold’s performance, Campbell praised his competitiveness and calmness, calling it one of his best games in a while.

However, he revealed that Arnold will be out for a significant time due to injury.

Reflecting on the team’s 4-1 record, Campbell expressed pride in their competitiveness and work ethic, while acknowledging room for improvement.

“We left so much out there,” Campbell said. “Just a couple of things here and there that are very easily correctable, and our production goes up even more.”

Looking ahead to their next opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs, Campbell emphasized the challenge posed by a team known for its ability to win and capitalize on opponents’ mistakes.

Campbell also spoke about recent defensive additions, including Trey Flowers and Nick Whiteside, and the “next man up” mentality the team embraces amid injuries.

When asked about potential schematic changes due to injuries to key defensive players, Arnold and D.J. Reed Jr., Campbell said the team will adapt but remain committed to their man-to-man coverage style.

Campbell acknowledged the challenge of losing four of their top five quarterbacks but noted the team’s resilience and ability to adjust.

Campbell praised Ya-Sin for his fearless and aggressive play as a next-man-up contributor.

Regarding the status of injured players, Campbell confirmed that Khalil Dorsey will be out for a while and stated that Kalif Raymond‘s availability will be clearer after Wednesday’s evaluation.

If Raymond cannot play, Isaac TeSlaa‘s opportunities will increase.
