What does Saturday’s game against Georgia mean for Auburn football recruiting?

  • October 7, 2025

Auburn’s upcoming game against Georgia is a big occasion for a variety of reasons.

It’s a rivalry game, a home matchup against a top 10 team, a primetime kickoff on ABC and a celebration of legendary Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, who will have his jersey retired.

Those are all reasons to use the occasion as a big recruiting weekend, and Auburn plans to do just that.

“These are the type of environments you want to get your top guys to, for sure,” head coach Hugh Freeze said on Monday, “and even other top guys, to see the special atmosphere that we have at Auburn.”

Official and unofficial visits, especially during the season, can be the best way to bolster your recruiting class. A win showcasing the best of what Auburn can be both on the field and in the stands can help convince uncommitted players to commit and even flip players committed to other schools.

Auburn has had a handful of recruiting weekends like this over the past two years, but more often than not, the result on the field hasn’t gone Auburn’s way.

“We’ve got to get over the hump in some of these games and prove that we just need a little more help to help us get over the hump against all these top 10 teams that we have in a row here, or top 15, whatever they are,” Freeze said. “I think we’ve proven that we’re right in the mix with them and convincing these recruits in a game like this that, ‘Come help us get over the hump,’ is vital.”

Auburn’s 2026 recruiting class currently features 12 committed players and ranks 50th in the country, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. However, Auburn will likely have plenty of visitors on Saturday that aren’t currently committed to the Tigers.

Whether that’s 2027 recruits, uncommitted 2026 recruits or 2026 flip targets, that creates opportunities for recruiting wins, which Auburn hasn’t had many of this cycle.

Flipping players during the season and letting results on the field be part of the recruiting pitch always seemed to be part of the formula for this class to finish strong after a slow summer. This weekend may be Auburn’s best opportunity to start doing that.
