State police double down on saying LSU football player Kyren Lacy caused deadly crash despite new video

  • October 7, 2025

HOUMA, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – Louisiana State Police are doubling down on saying they believe former LSU football player Kyren Lacy was responsible for a fatal crash that happened in December 2024.

Newly released video shows Lacy was 72 yards behind the vehicles that collided, prompting many to believe he could not have caused the crash.

The new video, originally published by TV station KFOL and later released by Louisiana State Police, shows former LSU football standout Kyren Lacy behind the vehicles that crashed in December 2024, not weaving in front of them as was initially believed.

The new video paints a different picture than what investigators initially told the public about the wreck.

Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, told KFOL there was no way Lacy could have been responsible for the crash that killed Herman Hall, 78.

Ory pointed to a portion in the crash report, attributing it to the District Attorney’s office, saying, “The evidence submitted in the crash report does not support that Kyren Lacy should have known that his actions were the cause of the crash that happened approximately 72 yards in front of him.”

However, in the video released Tuesday by Louisiana State Police, officials stood by their initial report, saying, “All evidence collected supports the conclusion that Lacy’s reckless operation of the green Charger into oncoming traffic triggered the chain of events involving the other drivers, ultimately resulting in the fatal crash.”

Lacy was booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on Jan. 12, 2025, on charges of hit-and-run driving with serious injury or death, reckless operation with accident and negligent homicide, records show.

He was released on a $151,000 bond.

Months later, in April 2025, Lacy died by an apparent suicide two days before a scheduled grand jury hearing related to the December 2024 crash.

ESPN reports that on the day of his death, the 24-year-old got into an argument with a family member and reportedly fired a gun before leaving the scene.

He reportedly led police on a car chase before shooting himself in his car, police said.

Lacy’s lawyer was not immediately available for comment. He has maintained Lacy’s innocence in the deadly crash from the very beginning.
