Week 5 in the NFL was very good to the Denver Broncos.
Not only did they beat the Philadelphia Eagles in stunning fashion, the rest of the AFC West all lost.
The Broncos topped Philly 21-17, using a thrilling fourth quarter comeback, then got to watch the good news unfold.
The Los Angeles Chargers were up early on the Washington Commanders, before falling apart and losing 27-10. On Monday Night Football the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars played a wild game, before a last second TD from Trevor Lawrence sealed K.C.’s fate in a 31-28 defeat. And the Las Vegas Raiders, playing at the same time as Denver, got blasted by the Indianapolis Colts 40-6.
A quick peek at the division standings shows the Broncos and Chargers tied with 3-2 records. L.A. holds the tiebreaker because of their Week 3 triumph, but Week 18 still looms at Empower Field at Mile High. The Chiefs are now 2-3, which is already more games than they lost a season ago, and the lowly Raiders are 1-4.
With an easier schedule coming up for Denver, one that includes both New York teams and the Cowboys, there’s a real chance the Broncos could be 6-2 by the end of October.
This weekend they should beat the Jets in London, while Los Angeles will take on the Dolphins in Miami (long travel) and Kansas City hosts the Lions (a very good team). It’s not crazy to think Sean Payton, Bo Nix and company will be alone in first place in the AFC West by Sunday night.
It’s always fun to watch the NFL standings, and this is something Broncos fans will be doing all year. And it’s even more fun when they sit on top, looking down at the rest of the division.
