Since the start of the offseason, North Carolina football has been in the highest level of sports media outlets. Hiring Bill Belichick, former Hall of Fame coach of the New England Patriots, caused the college football world to swirl. Now, the entire structure that UNC and Belichick have built is crashing down at their first, and Belichick may be next.

Now, conversations have started with the possibility of recruiting and rule violations surrounding head coach Bill Belichick. Per a report from Heel247, UNC administration has discussed a “potential exit strategy” regarding Bill Belichick. If there is something that North Carolina does not want to deal with the backlash on, it’s rule violations and the punishments that come along.

There is no denying that the team is off to one of the worst starts in college football for the anticipation and hype that surrounded the Tar Heels heading into the 2025 season. North Carolina is 0-3 against Power Four opponents, averaging just 10 points per game and allowing an average of 40 points per game to opponents.

After going down 35-3 against Clemson in the team’s first ACC game of the season, eventually losing 38-10, the fallout of the Belichick hiring and UNC downfall is coming to a head. Since Saturday, the docuseries that was planned with Hulu has since been canceled, showing that there is no viewership for a reeling program.

On top of that, assistant coach Armond Hawkins has been suspended for violation surrounding extra benefits. According to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, the alleged extra benefits involved “providing a player’s family members sideline passes for a game.”

For the time being, Belichick is still coaching this team and will head into UNC’s second bye week of the 2025 season. The next time the Tar Heels will take the field is on October 17th at 10:30 p.m. against the Cal Golden Bears on the road in another nationally televised game.
