The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night, falling to 2-3 and sitting in third place in the AFC West.

The 31-28 contest ended with a game-winning touchdown scramble from Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who stumbled twice on his drop-back before turning upfield and diving over the goal line.

While Lawrence was the focal point of this pivotal play, Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones also garnered some serious attention.

The play went viral on social media, with many angry fans perceiving a lack of effort from Jones.

The reaction to this play sparked so much backlash that the six-time NFL Pro Bowler ultimately deactivated his social media accounts.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid responded to questions about Jones’ lack of effort on the game-deciding play.

“You can’t think that the guys down. You can’t think that. You gotta just play the play, he knows. He’s been around this thing a long time,” Reid said. “That’s really what it came down to.”

Reid was then asked about the “uncharacteristic mistakes” his team has made early in the season.

“We’ve got to take care of that,” Reid added. “That’s something we’ve got to fix, and it’s getting us right now.”

Jones also discussed his game-deciding blunder when speaking with reporters earlier this week, admitting he believed Lawrence was touched down before getting up and bolting into the end zone.

“I thought multiple times we had him,” Jones said. “We just got to finish. We’ve got to finish. We got multiple guys there that we just got to finish that play. It was a fluke play for him to be able to break that many tackles. But yeah, I put it on us as a defense. We’ve got to finish. We’ve got to bring him down on that.”

The Chiefs will look to get their season back on track in a highly anticipated matchup against the 4-1 Detroit Lions in Week 6.
