The Cleveland Browns have traded cornerback Greg Newsome to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Tyson Campbell, according to multiple reports.
The swap will include a sixth-round pick going to Jacksonville and a seventh-round pick heading to Cleveland. Along with the Joe Flacco trade, this is now the second move the Browns have made this week.
With Newsome out of the equation, Campbell will likely slot into start across from Denzel Ward. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be unable to know if Campbell will start against them on Sunday.
Campbell will likely arrive in Cleveland just in time for Thursday’s practice, which would give him two practices and a walkthrough before Sunday. Given how much Cleveland plays single-high shells and man coverage, it is not inconceivable that Campbell could pick it up quickly and start.
Pittsburgh will likely be without their WR2 in Calvin Austin III, which will hurt their ability to exploit the Browns’ man coverage across the board.
Newsome was a first-round pick by the Browns in the 2021 NFL Draft, but was in the last year of his deal. Meanwhile, Campbell had just signed an extension with the Jaguars last offseason, so this at least gives the Browns more control at cornerback for the next two seasons.
