The Jacksonville Jaguars have made a dramatic change to the team’s secondary.
The Jaguars are sending cornerback Tyson Campbell and the Eagles‘ 2026 seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for CB Greg Newsome II and the Jets’ 2026 sixth-round pick, a league source confirmed to the Times-Union late Wednesday night. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first to break the news.
Newsome himself confirmed the news to Jaguars fans via social media.
The move comes just over a year after the franchise inked the former second-round pick to a four-year, $76.5 million deal, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid corners in the league. The deal included $53.4 million guaranteed, with additional incentives to bring the deal worth over $19.3 million per year.
Campbell’s deal included a $16 million signing bonus, according to OverTheCap.com. The deal was agreed to by the team’s previous regime, led by former general manager Trent Baalke. Now, the team’s new GM, James Gladstone, has reshaped nearly the entire team’s secondary to his vision. The only holdover as a starter currently is safety Andrew Wingard.
Newsome, 25, is currently playing on the fifth-year option, worth $13,377,000. He was originally drafted by the Browns out of Northwestern in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, selected just seven slots ahead of Campbell. Newsome will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, barring a new deal.
In 47 starts and 59 games played, Newsome has totaled 178 tackles (140 solos), 37 pass breakups, three interceptions and six tackles for loss in his career. Through five games this season, Newsome has accounted for three pass breakups.
The deal marks the second blockbuster trade the Jaguars have made with the Browns. The first came during the 2025 NFL Draft when Jacksonville sent four draft picks to the Browns to move up three spots to No. 2 overall, selecting receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter.
Now, the team has paired Hunter with a corner with impressive ball skills to match his own eye-popping skill set. Newsome’s role with Jacksonville is yet to be determined, but his addition could mean more playing time for Hunter with the versatility to have Newsome operate as a nickel or outside corner in certain packages.
Currently, the team deploys veteran Jourdan Lewis inside, but he has also operated as an outside corner in base this season.
Tyson Campbell’s Jaguars career marred by injuries, inconsistency
Campbell, 25, had been a starter with the Jaguars since being drafted at the top of the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Campbell’s best season came during the 2022 campaign. The former Georgia corner played in all 17 games and graded out as one of the league’s top corners after posting 15 pass breakups, three interceptions, 70 tackles (55 solos) and one forced fumble.
Since then, Campbell missed 11 games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to multiple injuries, including a lingering hamstring injury sustained in Week 1 that forced him to miss five games last season.
Though he sustained multiple injuries that forced him to miss games, Campbell quickly became one of the most respected players in the team’s locker room.
Still, Campbell’s absence led to other players receiving opportunities and limited his own production. Since posting 25 pass breakups in 2021 and 2022, combined, Campbell has accounted for just 16 over the last three years combined.
Campbell posted six pass breakups, a forced fumble and 34 tackles through five games this season.
Who is former Browns CB Greg Newsome II?
Newsome, paired with Browns four-time Pro Bowl corner Denzel Ward, at times was thought of as one of the toughest cornerback rooms to face off against in the league, especially with the addition of Martin Emerson in 2022.
After a season-ending injury to Emerson, the Browns moved Newsome to outside corner through the first five games this season. The former Wildcat split his time between slot and wide corner over the last few seasons since 2022, however.
In 2023, Newsome operated as the team’s primary slot corner, receiving 412 snaps inside with just 286 outside. This past season, he split his time out and in nearly equally, playing 275 snaps inside and 247 snaps outside, according to Pro Football Focus.
Newsome’s versatility is a unique trait, and his prowess to find the football is well-documented. Newsome’s best seasons came in 2022 and 2023 when he posted a combined 17 pass breakups.
