KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A new database of college football coaching salaries has revealed where Eli Drinkwitz, Lance Leipold and Chris Klieman rank among their peers.
According to USA Today Sports, Mizzou’s head coach Eli Drinkwitz is tied for the 10th-highest salary among college football coaches nationwide. USA Today said Drinkwitz is making $9 million per season with contract details that stipulate bonuses that could total up to $1.575 million.
Drinkwitz is tied with Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin, Tennessee’s Josh Heupel and Kentucky’s Mark Stoops for the 10th spot in the rankings and that group trails Kirby Smart, Steve Sarkisian, Kalen DeBoer and Brian Kelly among SEC coaches.
Lance Leipold, the man who has turned around Kansas football following more than a decade of futility, has a salary that ranks 37th nationally based on average annual salary. USA Today’s database says the 61-year-old who is in his fifth season with the Jayhawks is making $6.5 million.
That salary for Leipold ranks sixth among Big 12 coaches and carries a $22.9 million buyout.
It ranks ahead of Leipold’s in-state counterpart, Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman. The K-State head coach cracks the top 50, ranked 46th with an annual salary that pays him $5.25 million.
Klieman’s salary is slightly ahead of his Farmageddon rival, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell.
