Three weeks remain in the regular season and both the Brookville Raiders and Central Clarion Wildcats have something to play for.
For 2-5 Brookville, it’s a possible trip to the District 9 Class 3A playoffs — the Raiders were bumped up a class in mid-cycle due to adding Abraxas — while the Wildcats try to get back to .500.
The Raiders have their hands full at home Friday night with 5-2 DuBois while the 3-4 Wildcats host 1-6 Bradford at Clarion High School’s Wiser Field. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
The Raiders, after playing the other two Class 3A teams in close losses — 24-14 to St. Marys and 24-14 to Brockway — might make a case for a playoff berth if they finish strong against Cameron County and Redbank Valley. A four-win season could make a playoff case.
The Wildcats, while it’s likely they’ll enter the Class 2A playoffs with at least Karns City, have DuBois and Butler remaining after this week.
Here’s a closer look at this week’s games:
DuBois (5-2) at
Brookville (2-5)
Both of the Beavers’ losses have come to unbeaten Punxsutawney in good games — 49-35 in Week 2 and 17-14 in Week 6.
The Beavers boast the powerful senior passing/receiving duo of quarterback Trey Wingard and Jaxson Hanzely. Wingard has already thrown for 1,962 yards and 30 TDs against eight interceptions while completing 125 of 198 passes. Hanzely owns ridiculous stats as well with 50 receptions for 1,122 yards and 17 TDs.
“We have a couple injuries where we’re trying to get some guys back,” Raiders head coach Bill Morrison said. “Trey Wingard is a great quarterback in a good system and they want to feature him and we’re well aware of that. We’ll try to cover on the back end and get after him on the front and hopefully our offense can stay on the field as long as possible.”
The Raiders average 240 yards per game offensively with running back Sam Krug leading the way. He’s rushed for 530 yards on 89 carries and five TDs, basically in what’s been four starts as the feature rusher.
Quarterback Trenton Colgan (86-for-152, 970 yards, 12 TDs, 6 Ints.), and receivers Hayden Freeman (26-325, 7 TDs) and Parker Kalgren (30-252, 1 TD) lead the passing game.
The Raiders beat the Beavers at home, 35-20, in 2023. Last year, DuBois won at home, 41-7. The Beavers lead the all-time series, 24-11.
Bradford (1-6) at Central Clarion (3-4)
No team in District 9 has given up more points than the Owls, who have yielded 52.6 points per game to opponents with their lone win a 28-16 victory over Otto-Eldred in Week 2.
The Owls are coming off a 61-6 loss to Brockway, which the Wildcats shut out 30-0 in Week 5.
Bradford is a run-oriented offensive team led by its top players Logan Kohler (60-377, 3 TDs) and Tommy Langdon (88-342, 4 TDs). Quarterback Andrew Giordano has 341 yards on 26-for-63 passing for the season.
The Wildcats got a boost from the return of Ethan Rex to the lineup last week as he ran for 151 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Carter Hindman threw for 137 yards.
After the Owls, the Wildcats visit DuBois next Thursday and then close out the regular season with Butler on Oct. 24 at PennWest Clarion’s Memorial Stadium.
