Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters on Wednesday about the special teams issues that have arisen during recent games.

“Always go back to the basics,” said Reid, “Angles that you take are so big on special teams, to put yourself in position to block, so you’re doing it in space, so you’ve got to be very disciplined so that you don’t let your hands grab any cloth and so on. So you gotta be real careful, the best way to do it is you go out and practice faster. We’ll put guys in where they fit the right angles and get the right position.”

Multiple penalties on special teams from linebacker Jack Cochrane were crucial in Monday’s loss to Jacksonville. Harrison Butker’s inadvertent kick off out of bounds also set up the Jaguars’ game-winning drive as Reid assessed his long-time kicker’s issues.

“Yeah, I think, like any golfer, sometimes you’re hitting it good, and other times it’s awful that you work through it,” said Reid, “Keep swinging, man, and he’ll do that. He’s a talented kid, tough, mentally tough, not really worried about him.”

Kansas City will host the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, which relies considerably on the details, especially on special teams, as a key to their early-season success.
