Pershing County football team
Accolades: Pershing County won last year’s Class 2A state championship game, 26-6, over Incline to cap an undefeated 2024 season and has began this year 6-1 overall and 3-0 in league with last week’s 46-0 thrashing of the Highlanders in a state-title game rematch. The Mustangs have outscored their opponents, 268-69, this season.
Story in short: Pershing County is a high school football powerhouse with 11 state championships in its history with 14 state tournament appearances in the last 16 seasons with titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2024. Last year’s championship snapped a four-year title drought with the Mustangs the favorite to repeat again this season. The team is led by starting quarterback Ayden Montes, who has completed 13-of-22 passes for 395 yards with seven touchdowns while also rushing for 232 yards and two more scores. Six other players have scored rushing touchdowns with Trenton Rhodes accounting for 574 yards and nine touchdowns. Rhodes also has a team-high 26 tackles and two sacks. Ramon Sanchez has added a pair of interceptions.
Quote to note: “That they play their hearts out every game is our ultimate goal. Win, lose or draw, we don’t care as long as they’re giving effort. We can correct scheme issues and all that. As long as they’re giving it their all, we’ll be in good shape.” — Pershing County High football coach Mike Brooks
