The Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers are closing in on a Week 6 matchup in South Florida. Both teams have finished their week’s practice schedule and released their respective final injury reports for the game, with six players ruled out of the contest.
For once, it seems like the Dolphins are on the good end of the injury report after weeks of seeing player after player sit out with various injuries. The team still has 14 players on the injured reserve list and one on the physically unable to perform list, but those on the active roster seem to be getting healthier.
For Miami, defensive back Elijah Campbell and linebacker Tyrel Dodson are both out of the game. Campbell has a quadriceps injury that limited him in practice on Wednesday, and he did not participate in workouts on Thursday or Friday. Dodson sustained a concussion during last week’s game and is still awaiting clearance to return to full work, being a non-participant in the first two days of practice, then limited on Friday. Head coach Mike McDaniel announced they would be ruled out during his media availability earlier on Friday, explaining, “Yeah, they’ll be out. Realistically, we’re just making sure ‘T. Dot’ (Tyrel Dodson) gets better each day so he can get through the protocol.”
Chargers offensive line without two starters
Los Angeles ruled out four players, including some key members of the roster. The team will be without both starting tackles. Left tackle Joe Alt was ruled out with an ankle injury and right tackle Trey Pipkins has a knee issue. Both players were unable to practice during the week.
Also ruled out were former Dolphins defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand and wide receiver Derius Davis. Hand has a groin issue and Davis has a knee problem. Like Alt and Pipkins, neither player practiced this week.
Dolphins may finally be getting good news at cornerback
Center Aaron Brewer and cornerback Storm Duck were both listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. “I think based upon physically that would be unknown,” McDaniel said of Brewer’s availability due to an injury to his pectoral muscle. “I would say I’m hopeful just based upon the captain leader that he is but that will be to be determined. We’ll see how it progresses.”
McDaniel also updated the status of Duck, who has an ankle injury, along with wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, Jr., who has been dealing with a knee injury since signing with Miami a couple of weeks ago, but did not have a game designation this week, indicating he will be available. McDaniel stated, “Going into the game, I think we’ll end up having Storm as questionable. He hasn’t had any setbacks so we’ll see how that goes, and ‘Ced’ will be available.”
Tua Tagovailoa update following hip and thumb injuries
The good news for Miami on the injury report was the lack of a designation for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was limited on Wednesday with issues to his hip and his thumb on his throwing hand.
“It would be different hip (injury) than last year,” McDaniel clarified about Tagovailoa’s hip. “Same hip but completely different injury, so unrelated to any other hip-related issue was what he was getting treated.”
Turning to the thumb issue, McDaniel was asked if Tagovailoa was able to grip the ball normally, with the coach responding, “Yeah he is. He fully participated the whole week.”
He then added, when asked if the former Pro Bowl quarterback would be starting, “Yeah.”
Chargers could see return of linebacker Denzel Perryman
Los Angeles opened the 21-day practice window for linebacker Denzel Perryman this week, designating the 2015 second-round pick out of the University of Miami to return from injured reserve. He started the team’s Week 1 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, but was limited to just eight snaps before an ankle injury sidelined him. The Chargers could activate him before the game.
In 11 games last year for Los Angeles, Perryman recorded 55 tackles and one sack. It marked the start of his second stint with the franchise, following his selection by the then San Diego Chargers in 2015, playing with them through the 2020 season. He spent 2021 and 2022 with the Las Vegas Raiders, earning his only Pro Bowl selection, then was a member of the Houston Texans in 2023.
Tight end Darren Waller, offensive lineman Larry Borom available for Miami
Along with Tagovailoa and Wilson, Miami did not give game-day designations for tight end Darren Waller or offensive lineman Larry Borom. Waller has been dealing with a hip injury all season. He did not practice on Wednesday for his normal rest day, then was limited on Thursday and Friday. Waller has become a key member of the Dolphins’ offense, catching eight pass for 105 yards and three touchdowns in two games played. Miami has limited him to just 48 offensive snaps as he works back from the injury and a year out of football in 2024.
Borom was limited on Wednesday due to a thumb injury before moving to full participation for the rest of the week.
Both players should be ready to play on Sunday, barring any setbacks.
Kennan Allen, Mekhi Becton expected to play for Los Angeles
The news was not all bad for the Chargers. Wide receiver Keenan Allen, guard Mekhi Becton, and cornerback Ja’Sir Taylor were all on the injury report, but did not get a designation. Becton has a hand issue and Taylor was ill early in the week.
Allen was given a rest day during the week.
All three players did not practice on Wednesday, then were full participants the rest of the week.
The Dolphins host the Chargers on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Eastern, with CBS on the television coverage.
