What is the best feeling as an NFL fan base?
Obviously, winning. While you despise the Tom Brady Patriots and roll your eyes at every Patrick Mahomes or Travis Kelce commercial in the current Kansas City Chiefs dynasty, if you’re a fan of those respective eras, there’s nothing like it. Every weekend is a party, every loss is a shrug of the shoulders, and January is a month of celebration of nights heading to bed dreaming of a February coronation.
Although the 2-4 New York Giants fans are unlikely to plan a trip to San Francisco in the winter for the Super Bowl, they have achieved what I believe is the second-best feeling an NFL fan base can experience, just short of outright dominance and perennial contender ship.
They might have found the nucleus of their future in the quartet of Jaxon Dart (quarterback), Cam Skattebo (running back/bowling ball), Malik Nabers (wide receiver), and Abdul Carter (EDGE). Four of the most essential positions every title-contending team needs to succeed, and the Giants fans now believe that those four are the core that will see them define this new era of football.
It was not only that the Giants won last night against a divisional rival and a defending champion in the Eagles, but it was also the way they went about it.
It was fun. It was silly. It was the type of football where you lose sight of the score and watch as Dart runs around a parade of linemen trying to pull him down, only for the rookie to find a hole to break through and burst for a touchdown. There were instances where any sane, veteran quarterback would have slid out of bounds, only for Dart to jump headfirst into the unknown, giving up his body for a first down.
Behind him, Skattebo, the human personification of a cinderblock fused with a wild animal, thrashed across the field. The Eagles would throw up a wall of men to slow him down, and Skattebo would spin, snarl, and drag anyone near him into the end zone. Dart and Skattebo would dance and smack their heads together, turning a primetime NFL game against the Eagles into kids running around at middle school lunch period.
After the game in the post-game interview, Skattebo tore off his shirt like the Incredible Hulk as Dart urged him on. The crowd, which had felt like it was in fanbase purgatory just a few weeks ago, was now hollering with laughter and high-fiving at the scene. It didn’t matter that the possibility of the playoffs was still dire — at that moment, nothing else mattered.
As the fans exited MetLife, there were no talks of standings or placement. They discussed Dart’s daring, Skattebo’s chaos, and Carter’s game-breaking ability. What will happen when you add Nabers to this newfound, exciting Giants offense?
The New York Giants probably aren’t going to win the 2025 Super Bowl.
But the New York Giants have become the most fun team in the league.
And as it was with Mahomes at the start of the Chiefs’ dynasty, with Kelce flanking him as they poured points on the scoreboard like an avalanche, fun sometimes blooms into something much greater.
For now, though, Giants fans can look forward to what moments Dart, Skattebo, and the rest of their team come up with next.
