MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — Reggie Bush believes the Miami Dolphins have a problem — and it’s not Tua Tagovailoa.
The Dolphins are currently 1-4 entering their home matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Miami has had a very disappointing season, with their offensive struggles on full display this season. Despite entering the year with a stacked supporting cast in Tyreek Hill — who is now injured and out for the season — Jaylen Waddle, Darren Waller and De’Von Achane, the Dolphins rank 21st in points scored.
Tagovailoa has been blamed heavily for the team’s struggles. Although his passing numbers look respectable with a 100.1 passer rating and 10 touchdowns, he has also thrown some costly interceptions, including one late in a close loss against the Buffalo Bills. He also failed to make timely completions late in a loss against the Carolina Panthers, a game in which the Dolphins blew a 17-point lead.
However, Bush — who played for the Dolphins during the 2011 and 2012 seasons — says a big issue is the offensive play-calling and direction from head coach Mike McDaniel rather than Tagovailoa.
“(With) the Miami Dolphins. Mike McDaniels has been running the same exact offense since he’s been there,” says Bush. “He stands in front of the podium with this exact same look — like he’s depleted. He just doesn’t know. People have to start understanding he just doesn’t know. It’s OK if you don’t know. But if you’re doing the same things over and over and over and you’re expecting different results, come on, you can’t be serious.”
Bush defends Tagovailoa, saying the quarterback gets the ball out quick. However, he’s taking too many hits and the Dolphins rely too much on Tagovailoa when he’s throwing the ball 30-to-40 times a game.
“I like Tua,” says Bush of Tagovailoa. “Tua is just throwing the ball too much. That’s my assessment. Just stop having him drop back so much and throw the football, run the football. Give him some help in the run game. You got De’Von Achane, a great running back.”
The former star running back says the Dolphins’ weapons are “not being used the right way” under McDaniel.
“The Miami Dolphins have a ton of weapons, but they’re just not being used the right way,” says Bush. “It’s unfortunate, because I like Tua a lot. The thing that worries me with Tua is just the amount of concussions he’s had. That’s my only worry with Tua and one more concussion, one more bad concussion and I’m taking him out for good. I’m not even allowing him to go back in there. That’s just the player in me.”
Bush’s recommendation is for the Dolphins to rely on the run game to protect Tagovailoa and set the tone for games. Miami currently ranks 30th in rushing and 31st in rush attempts.
“If you don’t have a coach who believes in the run game, then you’re going to get this every year,” says Bush of the Dolphins. “I’m saying this is what you’re going to be at every year, you’re going to be 8-8, 7-9 you’re going to be staring at every year. You must control the tempo of the game first and foremost. That’s why I talked about tone setters. Tone setters are the tempo controllers. They let the other team know that is how it’s going to be.”
