Interim on deck: Petrino files

It is not the first time in the driver’s seat for the longtime college football coach. It is his second stop in Fayetteville, as the first one ended with the misfortune of forced firing despite a strong record during his time.

In his first three-year stint, Petrino went 34-17 as head coach of the Hogs from 2008-11. After a motorcycle incident, with multiple layers of background, Petrino was let go by the university despite an 11-2 finish in his prior season.

However, after multiple stops, as coordinator and head coach, Petrino eventually made his way back to Arkansas as the offensive coordinator before the 2024 season. Now, he has earned the promotion to interim head coach following the firing of Sam Pittman.

This season, Petrino has guided the Razorbacks to 505.8 yards per game to rank sixth in the country. It comes along with a 33.8 points-per-game average, to pair with a balanced pass and rush attack. The Hogs are second in the country at 7.8 yards per play and first in the country with 6.9 yards per rush.

He’ll become the first interim head coach the Vols have faced since 2015 when North Texas brought Mike Canales to town.
