Jacksonville Jaguars and former Georgia Bulldogs cornerback Tyson Campbell and a seventh-round pick were traded to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Greg Newsome II and a sixth-round pick.

Campbell is in the first year of the four-year, $76.50 million extension he signed in 2024. However, the new regime traded him away because of his issues with staying healthy and playing the ball. Campbell has missed 13 games in the last two years, including five last year due to a hamstring injury.

Campbell is excellent at press man coverage, but that’s because he’s good at playing the man instead of the ball. This year, he’s has allowed receptions of 50, 42, 34, and 31 yards, mostly on deep throws where he had a chance on the ball.

“We are trying to win football games now and part of this trade is that we think Greg Newsome helps us do that,” Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said in a statement on Thursday morning. Newsome is a former first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

With Cleveland, he will play alongside former All-Pro cornerback Denzel Ward, so he’ll be lined up against No. 2 wide receivers more often.

Campbell started 33 games with the Georgia Bulldogs. He recorded 89 tackles, four sacks, 10 passes deflected, and an interception against South Carolina in 2020. He missed five games due to injury in his sophomore year. Despite the injury concerns, Campbell was drafted by the Jaguars with the No. 33 pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft.
