The New England Patriots went big with their first pick in the seventh round. At No. 220 overall, they drafted 6-foot-7 offensive tackle Marcus Bryant out of Missouri.
Let’s grade the pick.
Instant grade: Patriots draft Marcus Bryant 220th overall
Bernd: At this point in the draft, it’s all about traits that you think can be cultivated. The big-bodied Bryant sure has them after posting an 8.96 Relative Athletic Score during the pre-draft process. Time will tell whether or not he will develop into a serviceable player, but he at least has some tools to work with. | Grade: C
Brian: Bryant brings plenty of size (6’7”) and length (34 5/8” arms) to pair with a 4.97-second 40-yard dash. He started all 13 games for Missouri at left tackle last season after transferring from SMU, making him an intriguing late-round developmental tackle pick. | Grade: B+
Matt: At over 6-foot-7 with arms nearly 35 inches long, Marcus Bryant is a true left tackle who played opposite Armand Membou for Missouri last season after four years at SMU. Bryant has the size you want in and NFL left tackle, and he tested well at the combine with a 40-yard dash under five seconds and a vertical of 31.5 inches. However, his lack of quickness left him susceptible to speed rushers, and he gave up a whopping 18 pressures on 141 true pass sets last season. He has the upside to be a force against the run and a wall against powerful rushers, and he should compete with Vederian Lowe for the backup job in New England this season. | Grade: C+
Pat: The Patriots need more depth along the offensive line, and they bring in Marcus Bryant, who has multiple years of experience starting at left tackle. He doesn’t have a ton of upside, but he is a very long and strong player who should be able to be a good backup for them right away. You can never have enough tackles that can actually play football, and the Patriots don’t have many guys that can, so I like adding one in the seventh. | Grade: C
The Patriots’ final draft pick is set to come at No. 228 later in the seventh round. Their biggest remaining needs include linebacker and developmental tight end.
