The Chicago Bears are in a dogfight against the Washington Commanders in a one-score game, but it feels like things could be different had it not been for a few questionable calls by the officials. Alex Moore’s officiating crew has been busy calling penalties, and they’ve had a significant impact on the Bears on both sides of the ball.
In the first half of the Monday Night Football matchup, the Bears offense was driving downfield with eyes on the end zone, but a ticky-tack offensive pass interference on rookie tight end Colston Loveland negated a first down and eventually led to a field goal. Later on, the defense was clamping down on Jayden Daniels and the Commanders’ offense, where they appeared to stop them on a crucial third down. A phantom facemask call on Nahshon Wright kept the chains moving, however, and Washington capitalized with a touchdown.
The officiating had been questionable for most of the night. The most egregious call on the Bears, though, came in the second half and took a touchdown off the board. Quarterback Caleb Williams lobbed a throw to Rome Odunze in the end zone for the score, but it was wiped off the board due to an illegal formation penalty on Theo Benedet as he appeared to be slightly off the line of scrimmage. The evidence wasn’t convincing, however.
Those calls have fans irate on social media as they wonder what is going on with this crew. Here are some reactions:
I’m usually of the belief that officiating evens out over the course of a season.
But in the minutiae of this game… this is pure and utter destructive officiating by this crew.
Quite literally pocketing points for the Commanders.
Atrocious.

Holy over-officiating. This crew is nit-picking like crazy.
Call that on first down in the first quarter if you’re trying to make a point.

Flag heavy crew and of course every single call is going against the #Bears.

How do you take a Bears TD away on THAT call. When you can’t decipher the penalty even in replay — or a still shot — it’s a no call.

Oh so it shouldn’t have been a penalty. That’s awesome

The poor calls by the officials keep piling up. That call on Theo Benedet is a disgrace!!!! And, the league won’t allow an official in the sky to overturn that fallacious ruling is a double disgrace.#Bears being robbed
