GREEN BAY — Lukas Van Ness’ sack of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco during the second half of Sunday’s 27-18 victory was a thing of beauty.
It was also the Green Bay Packers defensive end’s final snap of the game, as he suffered a foot injury that ended his day.
The good news? The injury did not end his season, as Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Van Ness’ injury wasn’t the catastrophic one that it could have been.
“We definitely avoided something serious,” LaFleur said during his usual day-after-the-game Q&A session with reporters on Monday at Lambeau Field. “But how long he’ll be out remains to be seen.”
Van Ness’ sack, which was his first full sack of the season, was part of a 22-snap day in which he also had another quarterback hit and two total tackles. On the play, he zoomed past Bengals left tackle Orlando Brown with an incredibly explosive move off the snap. It was as if Van Ness had timed up the snap count perfectly, and Brown never laid a glove on him.
Shortly thereafter, Van Nesson was on the back of a cart riding to the locker room with a member of the training staff. After the game, Van Ness was in a walking boot and on crutches.
“He was playing pretty well,” LaFleur said of Van Ness. “He’s been impactful and playing physical. If he’s unable to go, it’s definitely going to be a loss.”
Meanwhile, the Packers also got good news on safety/nickelback Javon Bullard, who left the field during the fourth quarter to be evaluated for a possible concussion. LaFleur said Monday that Bullard was not in the concussion protocol, meaning he avoided what would have been his second concussion in three games.
“It’s a major sense of relief. I went up to him right after the game, I’m like, ‘Hey, how [are you]?’ He’s like, ‘I’m fine,’” LaFleur recounted. “Usually you can tell if a guy’s dinged up or not. I’m certainly not a medical professional but those guys took him through, got him evaluated and he passed. He told me it was more of a stinger than anything else.”
LaFleur didn’t deliver an update on wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks, who left the game with an ankle injury one snap into the second half, and he said he had no update on right tackle Zach Tom, who was in significant pain after playing all 61 of the Packers’ offensive snaps despite the oblique injury that has had him in-and-out of the lineup.
“I just want to go home and go to sleep. Last time hurt way worse. This one hurt bad, but it was manageable,” Tom said after the game.
Asked what he thought of the offensive performance, Tom replied, “I’ll be honest, I don’t remember much. I know we were scoring, so that’s a good thing.”
Asked if he couldn’t remember because he was in such pain, Tom responded, “Yeah, it’s because of the pain. I usually remember everything. Not today.”
LaFleur said he didn’t hear anything from the medical staff about Tom suffering some sort of setback.
“I haven’t had any updates one way or another in regards to like any setbacks or anything like that,” LaFleur said. “I thought he battled, I thought he played extremely hard, and it was nice to have him back out there.”
