‘The greatest rookie season in American sports history’: Alex Smith on Jayden Daniels

Alex Smith says that Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels had the best rookie season in American sports history.

Sports Seriously

There have been six players in NFL, AFL and AAFC history with the last name “McCaffrey,” according to Pro Football Reference. Four of them come from the same immediate family.

Luke McCaffrey, the second-year wide receiver and kick return specialist for the Washington Commanders, is the youngest of the four in that family. His father, Ed McCaffrey, was a three-time Super Bowl champion. His eldest brother, Max McCaffrey, was an NFL wide receiver for three years.

The most highly renowned of the four family members is Luke’s older brother, Christian McCaffrey, the active lead running back for the San Francisco 49ers.

Here’s what to know about Luke McCaffrey as the Commanders host the Chicago Bears on “Monday Night Football” in Week 6:

Is Luke McCaffrey related to Christian McCaffrey?

Yes, Luke McCaffrey is Christian McCaffrey’s younger brother and the youngest son of three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey.

Luke McCaffrey was a third-round selection by the Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft. He began his collegiate career as a quarterback for Nebraska, but transferred to Rice and became a wide receiver in 2021.

The former third-round pick has taken over as Washington’s leading kick return specialist in the 2025 season after slowly building up his role on special teams late last season.

Through five games, Luke McCaffrey also has seven catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Christian McCaffrey leads the NFL with his 154 touches and 780 yards from scrimmage, most of which are from his 444 receiving yards.

The McCaffrey brothers still have yet to meet in an NFL game. The 49ers and Commanders did not play each other in 2024, nor are they scheduled to play in 2025.
