The Penn State Nittany Lions have had a brutal 2025 college football season thus far. After starting the year looking like a top-tier national championship contender, the program has lost three straight games, including the last two losses coming against the UCLA Bruins and Northwestern Wildcats.
Following the loss to Northwestern, Penn State decided to make a change. The program opted to fire head coach James Franklin.
Unfortunately, the Nittany Lions also saw star quarterback Drew Allar go down with a season-ending injury against the Wildcats. His college career has come to an end in a very depressing way.

Moving forward, Penn State will need to figure out who the right person to lead the program into the future will be. There are quite a few potential coaching candidates who have been suggested as potential options for the Nittany Lions.

With that being said, a very intriguing potential candidate has been suggested. Penn State has been connected to an Ohio State Buckeyes’ coaching legend. Of course, that legend is none other than Urban Meyer.
Chase Fisher of Penn State Nittany Lions on SI has suggested Meyer as one of the top names to know in the Nittany Lions’ coaching search.
“Urban Meyer, the current FOX college football analyst who won national championships at Ohio State and Florida, initially was a candidate to replace Joe Paterno,” Fisher wrote. “While Meyer, 61, hasn’t shown any interest in returning to coaching, Penn State is an enticing destination if he has a change of mind. “
Throughout his head coaching career, Meyer has led four different programs. He has been the head coach at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State.
Over the years, Meyer has compiled a 187-32 overall record. He has also won three national championships as a college football head coach.

Heading into the future, one of the most important things for Penn State will be changing the team’s culture. The Nittany Lions need to bring in a head coach who can create a winning environment. That is what Meyer has done at each of his stops.
While there is no guarantee that he would have interest in coaching Penn State, a call is worth being made. He should be on the shortlist of potential candidates as the Nittany Lions look to get back to being a national championship contender.
