Tom Coughlin is on the sidelines as Super Bowl XLVI nears its conclusion. The New York Giants have fought well, but they’re down 17-15 to the empire known as the New England Patriots. Eli Manning, nearing his own end zone with four minutes left in the game, slings a ball 40 yards down the field to Mario Manningham for a miracle catch. The pass leads to a drive that wins Manning his second Super Bowl over Tom Brady and the Patriots, hoisting the Lombardi trophy in the air for New York City and the world to see.

It feels just like yesterday.

Actually, it’s been 5,000 days since that moment.

That was the last time a New York sports team won a championship in one of the four major North American sports leagues: the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL. The image of Manning smiling and pulling off a second miracle comeback to defeat their Boston rivals seared into the memories of every New York sports fan who was conscious at the time.

13-year-olds in New York were born after that championship. There are now kids going into college who have no recollection of seeing any NFL, MLB, NBA, or NHL team they support win a title. A city that was once known for lifting trophies every year with the New York Yankees has gone barren, as their chance at a title was cut short in 2024 by the Los Angeles Dodgers and, most recently, by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Here is the closest every New York team has come since Manning won his second Lombardi.

New York Yankees (MLB): 2024, lost World Series to Los Angeles Dodgers (one win, four losses)

New York Mets (MLB): 2025, lost World Series to Kansas City Royals (one win, four losses)

New York Knicks (NBA): 2024-25, lost conference finals to Indiana Pacers (two wins, four losses)

New York Islanders (NHL): 2019-20, lost conference finals to Tampa Bay Lightning (two wins, four losses)

As we move onto day 5,001 and wonder when one of the teams will replace the memory of Manningham, New York City finals will hope the streak doesn’t reach five digits.
