METAIRIE, La. (Louisiana First) — The New Orleans Saints have the worst record in the NFC, sitting at 1-5 through the first six weeks of the NFL season. However, quarterback Spencer Rattler isn’t the reason the Saints are losing games.

The second-year quarterback has delivered steady performances, protecting the football, avoiding excessive sacks, and making smart decisions, yet he holds just a 1-11 record as a starter in his career.

Although Saints head coach Kellen Moore acknowledges the importance of winning games, he emphasized that it’s equally about the quarterback’s development and overall growth process.

“Ultimately, our job is to win games. And we got to win games. I know that. Spence knows that. We all know that,” Moore said. “But as you go through the process, you really have to hone in on the details of it. The details, the opportunities that you’re presented, and ‘are you taking advantage of those opportunities?’ What I do see is playing a lot of really successful football, a lot of clean football. We do have some small margins that we can grow in and some situational football in particular.”

Moore, a former NFL quarterback himself, pointed out that this season, the league features a wide range of starting quarterbacks who haven’t followed the traditional path to success.

“All these QBs go on different paths, different journeys in this league,” Moore said. “I think that’s a cool example of this. If anything, this year I think emphasizing the journeys that all these quarterbacks take are all different. The guys who have gone to their second or third stop and are having success. The guys who were in last year’s class are having that big bounce this year. Obviously, there are plenty of crafty vets who’ve been doing it like Matthew (Stafford) and Dak (Prescott), and these guys for a long time. All these guys are on different journeys, different paths, and it’s about growth and taking advantage of opportunities.”
