CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Browns want to open the 2029 NFL season in their new indoor suburban stadium, but the deal struck with Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb provides some fudge room if the Brook Park stadium isn’t done in time.

Under written terms of the agreement released by City Hall on Friday, the Browns could exercise options to stay on the lakefront through the 2030 season.

That was the biggest piece of new information not previously disclosed when the settlement agreement was jointly announced on Monday by Bibb and Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam.

The team is still targeting 2029 for the opening of the new stadium, and the clause is just there for insurance if unexpected delays come up, a spokesperson for the team said.

The Browns’ lease at the existing city-owned stadium downtown expires after the 2028 season.

But the Browns under the settlement agreement have an option to extend the lease for an additional two years – one year at a time – through as late as Feb. 1, 2031.

Otherwise, the term sheet largely involves putting into writing the details announced by Bibb and the Haslams.

Those details include a timetable for $100 million in team payments and spending, beginning with a $25 million payment due Dec. 1 — unless the agreement has not yet received formal approval. The team is also responsible for demolishing the existing stadium, estimated at $30 million, and for making additional payments at set intervals starting in 2029.

In addition to the city’s agreement to dismiss its lawsuits against the Browns, the agreement also states that the city must use its “best efforts to seek the dismissal” of the lawsuit former Mayor Dennis Kucinich filed in attempt to block the team’s move from Cleveland.

The city previously had asked a judge to toss out that suit on procedural and legal grounds.
