E.D. White found themselves in a tough spot on Friday night – trailing in the second half against a very good Lutcher team.

But the Cardinals refocused, made plays and found a way to bounce back, roaring to a 4th-straight win to get over .500 for the first time this season.

The Cardinals beat Lutcher 31-21 on Friday, earning their 4th straight win and getting to 4-3 on the season.

Coach Kyle Lasseigne said he was proud of his team in victory over a quality foe.

“Lutcher is a good football team,” Lasseigne said. “We made some mistakes early. We weren’t sustaining drives. We had a few mistakes tackling. And to their credit, they made plays and took advantage. Down the stretch, I thought we executed better and played good football and it was good to get a very good win for our program.”

Lutcher led the Cardinals 21-17 in the third, and was doing things to give E.D. White problems on both ends of the field. But E.D. White rallied back for a pair of 2nd half scores that enabled them to go on top and stay on top.

Chase Naquin was huge for the Cardinals in that rally. He had a punt return for a touchdown negated by penalty, caught a touchdown and made countless plays on defense.

Lasseigne said Naquin was masterful in the win.

“He’s a kid who never leaves the field,” Lasseigne said. “He is a true senior leader and he was very big for us.”

The Cardinals got stops late with the defense buckling down, forcing a turnover and creating a short field for the offense, which created the 2-score edge and win.

Lasseigne said he credits coach Chris Bergeron for some tweaks and his kids for executing to get the team the win – making them above .500 for the first time this season.

TARPONS SOAR PAST ASSUMPTION

Without their head coach, star running back and on one of the longest road trips of the season, South Lafourche had two choices: sink or swim.

Like fish, they swam – swimming all the way to their 4th victory of the season.

The Tarpons beat Assumption 55-28 on Friday, getting to 4-3 on the season while rolling to a lopsided win.

South Lafourche did whatever it wanted offensively in the game, scoring on just about every possession and having success both on the ground and in the air.

Acting head coach Scott Sanamo said he was thrilled with the way the team competed in the win.

“We challenged them and they stepped up,” Sanamo said. “We couldn’t be prouder of how they handled everything this week.”

The Tarpons were without head coach BJ Young who was suspended for making public comments criticizing officiating in the team’s loss against Vandebilt. They were without halfback Landin Dardar who tweaked his ankle against Vandebilt and has a high ankle sprain.

But South Lafourche’s offense did not sputter with Josh Mack dropping dimes to Terrance Pitre and Andravin Hughes and the Tarpons’ offensive line pushing forward and opening run lanes.

Pitre had 7 catches for more than 200 yards. Hughes had 3 touchdowns.

The Tarpons dominated the 2nd and 4th quarters to create separation and get the big win.

The Tarpons will face Morgan City next week.

THIBODAUX STANDS TALL

It was a defensive struggle for a lot of the game between Thibodaux and H.L. Bourgeois.

But when it was winning time, the Tigers wore down the Braves and made big plays, surging forward to a big district win.

Thibodaux beat Bourgeois 33-3 on Friday, improving to 6-1 on the season in a big district win.

The score was 6-3 at halftime and that score held for a lot of the third quarter.

But Thibodaux broke the dam in the second half and grabbed control, using Damien Robertson’s arm and their playmakers’ speed to surge on top and cruise to a win.

Thibodaux bounced back in the win after losing last week to Hahnville.

The Tigers are poised to make the playoffs and be in a good spot to possibly host a home game.

The Tigers’ defense was also masterful in the win, shutting down the Braves’ explosive offense and keeping them out of sync to seal the victory.

TROJANS FALL TO HAHNVILLE

After losing to East St. John in Week 6, Central Lafourche coach Shelly Vedros told it to his team straight.

“I told them we need to win at least 2 to get into the playoffs,” he said. “Two out of the next 4.”

The first test in that challenge was not successful for the Green and Gold.

Hahnville beat the Trojans 49-16 on Friday, dropping the Trojans to 2-5 on the year.

The Trojans never had their footing from the start.

Hahnville got up early and never looked back, using their high-powered, explosive offense to take a lead they’d never relinquish.

The Trojans still have tough ones on their schedule. They face Destrehan next week – arguably the top team in our local 5A district.
