Every football season, there is an argument about who is the best quarterback in the National Football League. There is one name that always manages to come up, and that is Jalen Hurts from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Many Eagles fans and news reports talk about Hurts like he is the best quarterback in the league. He is a good athlete and leads his team to some big wins. However, I believe he is overrated and that he is not even among the top 10 quarterbacks. All this hype about him doesn’t match what he does on the field.
To begin with, when looking at his statistics, Hurts does not prove he is elite. During the 2023 season, he threw 15 interceptions, which is too many for a quarterback who is supposed to be elite.
You can take a look at his passing yards, and they don’t even land in the top 10. Hurts’ success comes from the overpowering and elite team surrounding him. The Eagles have the best offensive line in the league, and Hurts has all the time in the world to throw.
Hurts also has arguably the best wide receiver duo in the league. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith can do anything and make some spectacular catches to make Hurts look like he was throwing good balls when, in reality, he wasn’t.
Secondly, Hurts gets too much credit for winning when it’s not a one-person team. He needs the whole team to do its job in order for the Eagles to win. This comes from defense, offense and the coaching staff, as well.
The Eagles’ defense has generally been one of the strongest in the league, so the opposing teams could not make it close. The Eagles’ running backs are also very strong and, overall, they are just stacked with talent.
Hurts will face top defenses in the league that will make him pass the ball, and then I believe his weaknesses will start to show. He will either make poor choices under pressure or make inaccurate passes. This is something that you will never see from a quarterback who is supposed to be the best in the league.
