But close is not enough in the SEC.
Auburn had a chance to upset No. 16 Missouri on Saturday, but suffered a 23-17 double-overtime defeat in front of 88,043 fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Auburn is set to travel to play Arkansas in Week 9 with a 3-4 record after losing four games in a row.

Per Pete Nakos of On3, there is movement going on behind the scenes at Auburn. Boosters are holding informal conversations about Feeze’s future with the program. However, the Tigers may wait until after the regular season ends to make a final decision.
“Sources have told On3 that Auburn boosters have begun having informal conversations in the last week to discuss Hugh Freeze’s future,” Nakos wrote. “The Tigers are now 0-4 to open SEC play, but the schedule lightens up from here.
“In his press conference on Saturday night following the double overtime loss to Missouri, Freeze acknowledged the possibility of a quarterback change. His buyout is manageable at roughly $15 million. Some sources have speculated that the Tigers might not decide until the end of the season.”
The Tigers only ranked game remaining on the schedule will come on Nov. 29 when they host No. 6 Alabama.
During his postgame news conference on Saturday, Freeze acknowledged that he understood the situation he was in at Auburn.
“Listen, we all know what we signed up and I certainly know we fit what Auburn is all about,” Freeze said, via CBS Sports. “But Auburn is also about winning football and you know, we’re going to come to work Monday and get our kids ready to play Arkansas.
“These kids are playing their guts out and I know that we’ve changed the talent level here, but at the end of the day, at some point you have to win football games. I don’t make those decisions, those calls, I just know that God’s called me here to lead these young men through a very challenging and difficult time.”
Freeze is 14-18 overall and 5-15 in SEC play during his three seasons at Auburn. His best season with the Tigers came in 2023 when the program finished 6-7 and 3-5 in SEC play.
Auburn was ranked as high as No. 22 before losing 24-17 to then-No. 11 Oklahoma on Sept. 20.
