The San Francisco 49ers may be looking to bolster their receiving corps with a true downfield threat.

According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis is visiting with San Francisco.

Davis would be an interesting addition to a group that doesn’t have a ton of reliable veteran options. Among the players expected to make the team, only Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Demarcus Robinson have more than one year of NFL experience. Aiyuk is working his way back from a knee injury and Robinson could be facing a multi-game suspension.

Last season in Jacksonville Davis posted just 239 yards and two touchdowns on 20 receptions in 10 games. He missed the final six games of the season with a meniscus tear and was released just one year into a three-year, $39 million free agent contract he signed with the Jaguars.

Before that he was an ascending star with the Buffalo Bills where he hung up 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns on 163 catches across his four seasons with the club. The Bills selected Davis in the fourth round of the 2020 draft and he burst on the scene in the divisional playoffs vs. the Kansas City Chiefs when he had eight catches for 201 yards and four touchdowns in an overtime loss.

It would make sense if the 49ers are looking for another veteran given some of the massive question marks atop their depth chart. Davis had a down year last year, but he’s still only 26 and before last season he was a reliable downfield threat for quarterback Josh Allen. With players like Russell Gage, Isaiah Hodgins and Trent Taylor among the veterans on the 90-man roster, Davis would have a real shot to win a roster spot.
