ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – While just five games took place in the world of Alaska high school football this weekend, they were the five most important matchups to date.
Three of the four categories of football had their championships games, while Division I played a pair of semifinals to determine the final battle next week.
DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: SOLDOTNA 51 – LATHROP 28
Alaska’s only two bids for undefeated seasons that survived into the playoffs also carried all the way through the bracket until the end, beginning with Soldotna putting the cap on a dominant campaign in a title-game thrashing of Lathrop.
The Stars completed their three-peat at the expense of the team against whom their previous two state title wins also came. The Malemutes remain the last team to hand Soldotna a loss of any kind… one which came on October 5 of last year, 379 days, 13 consecutive Stars wins, and two Soldotna state titles ago.
DIVISION III STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: HOMER 20 – BARROW 0
Barrow’s feel-good season came to a deflating end at the hands of the Mariners, who pitched their fourth shutout of the year and avenged their only loss of the season, which came at the hands of Barrow up in Utqiagvik.
Even including that lone defeat, this 2025 Homer title-repeating campaign was one for the books, especially defensively: allowing less than six points a game across ten weeks and only once giving up double-digits, once again in the aforementioned Barrow loss.
9-MAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: INTERIOR GRAPPLING ACADEMY 41 – SEWARD 18
In their first season competing at any level of football, the Interior Grappling Academy Archangels capped off a fairytale maiden campaign with a dominant victory over Seward to officially claim the title of 9-Man’s juggernauts, a title the Seahawks occupied up until this year.
Quarterback Mana Lauaki-Hart tossed a pair of scores and ripped off another via a long touchdown run, while the defense ensured that the Archangels have still yet to lose a game in school history, or even win one by fewer than multiple scores.
DIVISION I SEMIFINALS: BARTLETT 9 – SERVICE 2
Running back September’s matchup between the Golden Bears and Cougars that featured two overtimes and 13 combined turnovers was bound to produce some odd numbers on the scoreboard, and this game obliged.
Bartlett’s dominant defense recovered from a shaky first-round performance against Dimond, holding the opposing offense scoreless for the third time this season and returning the Golden Bears to the state title game for the first time since they won it all in 2017.
DIVISION I SEMIFINALS: SOUTH ANCHORAGE 24 – WEST ANCHORAGE 10
Even after a 6-0 start and first-place finish, the defending D-I runners-up fell in the second round in a shockingly lopsided result.
The Wolverines took the lead in the third quarter and never gave it back, riding nearly 200 rushing yards and a pair of interceptions to avenge their season-opening loss to the Eagles in style.
