A look at the fines levied to one Cardinals players and around the NFL.
An Arizona Cardinals player was fined for the second time this season when linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither was deemed guilty of a hip-drop tackle in the team’s Week 6 game against the Indianapolis Colts.
In Week 3, tight end Trey McBride was fined $11,593 for taunting in the game against the San Francisco 49ers.
The play in Week 6 was on the kickoff after the Cardinals cut the Colts’ lead to 14-10 after a field goal when Davis-Gaither tackled returner Anthony Gould.
There was no penalty called on the play, which was expected when the tactic was made illegal because it is difficult to officiate on the field in real time.
The $17,389 fine was one of three hip-drops from that week’s games that also were not flagged and ran the total to nine this season with fines but no penalties.
In Sunday’s game for the Cardinals against Green Bay, Packers defensive end Micah Parsons was penalized for a hip-drop tackle on a sack of quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The penalty wiped out the play and the sack in a game where Parsons had three and the team six. Parsons will likely be on the list of fines for Week 7 that will be revealed Saturday.
In the game against the Cardinals, Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin was fined $11,593 for a late hit on a pass attempt to wide receiver Greg Dortch that was behind and well past him when he was hit by Franklin. That play was penalized.
There were no fines for wide receiver Zay Jones and linebacker Zaven Collins for facemask penalties in that game. Through six weeks, there have been 18 fines for facemask infractions, with only four not being penalized.
There were 21 fines in Week 6, with only nine being penalized. Through the first six weeks, there were 113 fines of which there was no penalty on 59.
The 21 fines totaled $244,312 and raised the six-week total to $1,355,089.
There were five fines for striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing, three for the hip-drop tackles, blindside blocks and use of the helmet, two for late hits and facemasks and one for a leg whip, obscene gesture, blow to the head or neck and a hit away from the play.
For the second consecutive week, there were no taunting fines after there were 13 in the first four weeks of the season,. Six of which were not flagged on the field.
