Right now, the Kansas City Chiefs look like a gathering hurricane after they started the NFL season with two losses in a row. They pulverized the Las Vegas Raiders, 31-0, on Sunday, for their fourth win in their last five games, and they’re starting to play like the version of the Chiefs that millions have come to know over the past half-decade or so.
There is a growing feeling across the league that they’re just getting warmed up and that they’re the team to beat, at least in the AFC. But who is the second-best team in the AFC right now?
Is it the Denver Broncos, who are in first place in the AFC West with a 5-2 record after their miraculous comeback against the New York Giants? Is it the Buffalo Bills, who always seem to put themselves in the conversation season in and season out?

According to ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky, it is the Indianapolis Colts, who have a league-best 6-1 record and are arguably the biggest surprise in football so far this season.

Coming into this season, practically no one outside the Hoosier State felt the Colts would do anything of note this season. They had tried to make Anthony Richardson into a franchise quarterback over the last couple of years, but it appears he just doesn’t have what it takes.
They took a flyer on Daniel Jones, the former No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft who was released by the Giants last season after several disappointing years with them. But Jones, at least so far this season, is looking like a new and improved version of his old self.
Through seven games this year, he has thrown for 1,790 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 71% of his passing attempts. His 4.7% touchdown rate is the highest it’s been since his rookie year, and his 105.9 passer rating and 79.7 QBR are easily career-highs.

The man some are now calling “Indiana Jones” also has help around him. Orlovsky shouted out general manager Chris Ballard for drafting tight end Tyler Warren, who leads them with 439 receiving yards, and they have three solid wide receiver threats in Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce and Josh Downs.
Jonathan Taylor remains one of the best, if not the best, running backs in the NFL, and he currently leads everyone with 697 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. The Colts’ defense, under new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, is eighth in points allowed and has been stuffing the run in outstanding fashion.

The question seems to be whether the Colts, and specifically Jones, can get past Kansas City in the playoffs. Jones has appeared in just two playoff games and won one of them, and while he’s playing well now, it would be another thing for him to perform well in January, or, for that matter, December.
But for now, it looks like the Colts have a pathway to get out of the “Temple of Doom” they have been stuck in for years.
