FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) – One of two sisters appeared in court Wednesday on charges related to a crash that killed three North Carolina high school football players.

Investigators say the 19-year-old, Destini Genwright, was racing her older sister, 21-year-old Dymond Monroe, at the time.

Monroe’s Honda Civic ran off Rosehill Road, killing three E.E. Smith High School students, according to investigators; Monroe was critically injured.

Court documents allege Genwright was going 76 in a 45 mile per hour zone.

The Oct. 8 crash rattled the entire Fayetteville community while loved ones honored the lives of 18-year-old Jai-Hyon Elliot and the two 17-year-olds, Nicholas Williams and Trevor Merritt, during funeral services last week.

Fayetteville Assistant Police Chief Todd Joyce said in addition to the loved ones of those lost, first responders who regularly deal with this type of trauma were shaken by this crash, too.

“It affects everyone involved,” Joyce stated. “It affects everyone, from the initial 911 call that came in to those telecommunicators who are dispatching the officers, to the officers who responded, medical personnel, our firefighters, anyone who came to the scene that night.”

The two sisters are facing four misdemeanor charges each related to racing, speeding, reckless driving and an insurance violation.

Monroe, who remains hospitalized, is also facing three additional felony counts of involuntary manslaughter.
