CANTON, Ohio —  Two former Cleveland Browns coaches and a former Browns president have made it one step closer to being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Former Browns coaches Bill Belichick and Marty Schottenheimer have been nominated as Pro Football Hall of Fame candidates for 2026

The candidate list will narrow to nine in early Nov.

One candidate will be a finalist for the 2026 class, which will be selected in late Nov.

Bill Belichick, Marty Schottenheimer and Mike Holmgren have all made it to the round of 12 in the voting process to be elected and be given one of pro football’s highest rewards.

Bill Belichick:

Bill Belichick, better known for his multi-Super Bowl tenure with the New England Patriots, was a head coach for the Browns from 1991 through 1995. During his time with the Browns, Belichick had a 36-44 regular season record and one playoff win against the Patriots.

He also notably released Quarterback Bernie Kosar, who was a fan favorite, before being fired in 1996.

Belichick had a career record of 333-178 with six Super Bowl titles.

Marty Schottenheimer:

Marty Schottenheimer is best known for bringing the Browns back to relevancy with his leadership that led the team to three-straight playoff seasons from 1985 to 1988. The Browns made it to back-to-back AFC Championship games during his tenure.

The team was 44-27 during his four-year stint in Cleveland. Schottenheimer was also known for coaching the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers.

He had a 205-139-1 career record.

Mike Holmgren:

Mike Holmgren was the President of the Browns from 2009 to 2012, where he failed to build a successful roster. Cleveland went 14-34 during his tenure.

Holmgren is better known for coaching the Super Bowl-winning Green Bay Packers during the 1996 season and a Seattle Seahawks team that made its first Super Bowl appearance in 2005. The former head coach and president went 174-122 during his career on the sideline.

Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Alex Gibbs, Chuck Knocks, Buddy Parker, Dan Reeves, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan and Clark Shaughnessy have all been nominated as well for their extensive and impressive NFL coaching careers.

Next Steps:

The Hall of Fame’s Blue-Ribbon Committee will narrow the list to nine semifinalists, who will be announced in early November. Later in the month, the committee will meet to complete a sequence of reduction votes to select one finalist for the 2026 class.
