The Washington Commanders have made a miserable announcement ahead of their Monday Night Football NFL clash against the Kansas City Chiefs. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn will be without his franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels, who is struggling with a hamstring injury, and defensive end Dorance Armstrong will miss the remainder of the 2025 season with a knee problem.
Quinn’s men are 3-4 in 2025 so far, placing them third in the NFC East behind the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, and one win better off than the New York Giants. It’s been a struggle to match the form they showed last year under Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels, who led the team to the NFC Championship game against division rivals, the Eagles, who went on to beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
Daniels, 24, has already missed two games this season, with Marcus Mariota replacing the former LSU star for the Week 3 win over the Las Vegas Raiders and the Week 4 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons. The quarterback returned in the Week 5 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, played in the narrow defeat to college rival Caleb Williams’ Chicago Bears, and withdrew in the Week 7 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Daniels will miss Monday Night Football against the Chiefs, but his hamstring knock isn’t considered serious. “It was not significant,” HC Quinn said of Daniels’ injury.
However, another injury sustained by a key Commanders player, Armstrong, is serious. He suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee in last Sunday’s 44-22 loss to the Cowboys.
Armstrong, who started the game against Dallas nursing a sore hamstring and injured his knee on the opening series, remains the Commanders’ top pass rusher with 5.5 sacks. His setback adds to the team’s defensive woes, as the unit has slipped to 21st in scoring defense and 27th in total yards allowed.
“That’s a hard one for us,” Quinn said. “I’m bummed for him; he was starting to make his mark.”
As for the Chiefs, they were rocking and rolling last weekend. They secured a 31-0 shutout win over the Raiders at Arrowhead. The game marked the return of receiver Rashee Rice, who missed the first six games of the NFL season through suspension.
Rice was suspended for violating the National Football League’s Personal Conduct Policy. His penalty stems from pleading guilty to two third-degree felony charges — collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury — after a high-speed multi-car crash in Dallas in March 2024.
He was quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target. Mahomes connected with Rice for seven receptions, racking up 42 yards and two touchdowns.
Rice revealed offseason conversations with his quarterback on how best to use him. “I basically told Pat I was a fade guy in college,” the 25-year-old said on Sunday about the play that led to his second touchdown.
“If you look at my college highlights, I caught a lot of back-shoulders at SMU. Just having a great quarterback, we just had to put it in the air, talk about it.”
“We worked on that throw all offseason,” Mahomes revealed. “To be able to do that in the season — kind of like we did in the preseason — was good to see.”
Andy Reid’s team has improved to 4-3 after a rocky start to the season. The Chiefs are looking to avenge last season’s failed three-peat attempt, in which they fell short in the Super Bowl to the Eagles.
