The Pittsburgh Steelers have released rookie offensive lineman Gareth Warren from injured reserve, according to the NFL transaction wire. The Steelers waived Warren on Aug. 19 with an injury designation.
Warren cleared waivers and is now a free agent.
Warren was injured during the team’s second preseason game, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he was removed while being evaluated for a concussion. He did not practice with the team on Monday.
A 6-foot-5 1/2, 328-pound product of Lindenwood University and Hawaii native, Warren first joined the Steelers as a tryout player at rookie minicamp this spring. He impressed enough in the three-day camp to earn a contract, and spent training camp and preseason.
Warren started out at as a guard at Lindenwood, which is in Lake Charles, Missouri, in 2021, the program’s final season at the NCAA Division II level. In 2022, Warren and Lindenwood moved up, becoming members of the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I.

Warren made four starts and played six games as a true freshman in 2021, earning All-GLVC third-team honors. In 2022, he started all 10 games at left guard and was an All-OVC second-team selection.
For his junior season in 2023, Warren switched from left guard out to left tackle. The transition was a smooth one, as he allowed just two sacks on the season, per Pro Football Focus.
In 2024, Warren and the Lions offensive line helped pave the way for an OVC-best 173.7 yards per game. After the season, he was invited to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he was first scouted by the Steelers.
