A former Bengals quarterback is stepping away from the football field and into the political arena, announcing his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama.AJ McCarron, who played for the Bengals in 2014-17 and again in 2023, said with his football career behind him, he’s raising his family in Alabama and moving from the sidelines and into the field of politics.He launched his campaign with a video posted to his YouTube page, “AJ for LG.”McCarron stated it’s “time for political newcomers and outsider candidates” sharing that during his time with the Bengals, he endorsed Donald Trump in 2016, because he was an outsider candidate.”Alabama is my home, it’s made me who I am, and I feel led from above to give back to the state that has given me so much,” McCarron said.McCarron was signed by the Bengals in 2024 for his second stint with the club, after originally being drafted by Cincinnati in 2014 out of Alabama.He was elevated from the practice squad following the season-ending injury to Joe Burrow and appeared in two regular season games for Cincinnati, attempting just five passes. McCarron was out of the NFL since 2020 prior to signing with the Bengals. He’s also spent time in the XFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks.
