FRISCO — The Cowboys’ linebacker room, a concern, is stabilizing somewhat as they enter a Week 8 game at Denver.

“Yeah, we’ve been in transition the last couple of weeks,” coach Brian Schottenheimer said.

In the offseason, linebacker Jack Sanborn was signed as a player familiar with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’ scheme. But after Sanborn missed the Carolina game with a concussion, he returned the following week and didn’t get any defensive snaps against Washington.

It seems the Cowboys have centered on Kenneth Murray Jr., Shemar James and a combination of Damone Clark and Marist Liufau at the three positions. Murray has emerged as the signal caller of the group while playing middle linebacker. Murray also called the signals while Sanborn played middle linebacker.

Murray received praise from the Cowboys’ coaches for his leadership in gathering the defensive players together to work on communication before the Commanders game.

“This is a business where next man up is real and I don’t think anything is ever settled, and I’ve learned that along the way,” Schotteheimer said. “That’s why you have great depth and that’s why you practice and go cross-train guys, and at the end of the day you never know when someone’s number is going to get called.”
