The New York Jets defense will face a significant challenge versus the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8.
Former Jets quarterback Joe Flacco is now starting in Cincinnati. Flacco led the Bengals to a 33-point performance in a primetime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week.
Jets Wire has identified three potential X-factors for the Jets’ defense versus the Bengals in Week 8.
Brandon Stephens, CB
Sauce Gardner remains in concussion protocol. Assuming he can’t suit up, Brandon Stephens will draw the Ja’Marr Chase matchup. That’s bad news for Stephens after Chase recorded 16 receptions for 161 yards and one touchdown with Flacco as his quarterback last week.
Jamien Sherwood, LB
Jamien Sherwood is the Jets’ leading tackler with 70. Second place (Andre Cisco) has just 38 tackles, roughly half of Sherwood’s takedowns. The Bengals’ struggling run game showed significant improvement versus the Steelers, so the Jets’ most reliable linebacker will have to be dialed in.
Will McDonald IV, EDGE
One of the knocks on Flacco is his lack of athleticism in the pocket. Jets EDGE Will McDonald IV needs to make him uncomfortable given his inability to escape pressure. McDonald has registered just two sacks in seven appearances thus far. The Jets require more pass-rushing production from their 2023 first-round selection.
