Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton knows his team was brutal for three quarters against the New York Giants last Sunday.
Even though the Broncos left Empower Field at Mile High with a shocking 33-32 win, they were down 19-0 after 45 minutes of football.
The offense looked stuck in the mud and fans even booed the team multiple times.
That can’t happen this weekend with the high-powered Dallas Cowboys coming to town — and Payton knows it.
At his press conference on Friday, he was in a sharing mood.
“Let’s be honest, I think we want to start better. Whether time’s coming off the clock, or it’s not, we’ve got to work on our first half,” Payton said.
It wasn’t just a bad first half against the Giants. A few weeks ago against the Eagles, in another improbable victory, the Broncos had only three points through three quarters.
Sean Payton is trying to figure out why this is, and also tweaking his practices to simulate more of a gameday feel.
“The point of emphasis this week, with the whole group, they handled it well and you’ve got to find a way to makes Wednesdays like Sunday. And sometimes that’s challenging,” Payton said.
Obviously, he wanted to see the Broncos players treat every day like a win or a loss was on the line. And coming off an emotional game, Payton isn’t afraid to harp on what must get better.
“That’s one of the things you look at as a coach, even after a big after win. Alright, there’s a lot of things that need fixing,” Payton said.
We’ll see if the Denver offense is indeed “fixed” this Sunday, or at least trending in a better direction.
The Broncos are 5-2, but clearly Sean Payton sees what the fans see. The operation on offense has to get smoother and it needs to happen quickly.
