The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
A word of advice if you’re trying to make sense of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Don’t do it.
Save yourself the pain and anguish, as this team is as volatile and unpredictable as the weather in Denver.
Offensively, you can’t complain. Aaron Rodgers has been incredible, passing for 1,270 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just five interceptions. He is currently tied for 4th in the NFL in passing TD’s with Patrick Mahomes.
Jaylen Warren continues to impress as a dual threat weapon when healthy. He’s rushed for 311 yards, while catching 17 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Kenneth Gainwell has stepped up just about every time his number is called.
D.K. Metcalf leads the team with 22 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns. He is an imposing specimen on the field, and when Rodgers gets him the ball in stride he’s off and running. Calvin Austin III has been injured the past few games, but has become a trusted part of the passing game when the ball comes his way. Roman Wilson’s snap count continues to grow, and he’s caught three passes for 29 yards the last two games. I’d really like to see what this kid is capable of if the ball came his way more often.
“I feel like… let me choose my words wisely… the player they drafted, I’m still that guy,” said Wilson this week. “I don’t wanna say anything wrong. I’m just gonna leave it at that. The player they thought they drafted, that’s who I am.”
The tight ends are a true strength, with Pat Freiermuth finally breaking through last week with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Jonnu Smith is 2nd on the team with 20 catches for 117 yards and two TD’s. Darnell “Mount” Washington has nine receptions for 84 yards and a score, and there isn’t a corner alive that wants to see him running full speed at them with the ball in hand. His blocking has been a big part of the run game being rejuvenated.
The monkey in the wrench? The fly in the soup? The pain in the ass? Yea, that the NFL’s highest paid defense that inexplicably gave up 33 points to the Joe Flacco led Cincinnati Bengals last week. The Bengals rolled up 470 total yards, including 142 yards rushing to a team that was averaging 56.7–DEAD LAST in the league. Chase Brown averaged 33.7 yards per game, and he embarrassed the Steelers for 108 yards. I get that Ja’Marr Chase is one of the best receivers in the league, but bro, seriously, 16 receptions for 161 yards??
After all the previous catches, you’d think, with the Steelers taking a late lead in the game, and the Bengals needing a field goal to win, that maybe you make an adjustment and double team the guy?
Hell no, he was wide open across the middle, basically putting his team in field goal position with one catch.
It’s so mindnumbingly painful to understand how a team with the likes of T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, and Jalen Ramsey playing at each level of the defense, and you are at the ass end of the NFL in just about every defensive statistic.
I know Mike Tomlin’s defensive system sucks, but at the same time, the players are allowed to make a play, a sack, a stop, a pass break-up, SOMETHING!
How does Flacco, who has the range of a wounded elk, not get blitzed and pressured on every play? There’s only so far he’s going to go in the pocket. Get to him. But they allowed him to sit back there and order a sandwich on Grub Hub, while picking apart the Pittsburgh secondary pass after pass.
“They did exactly what we were expecting and hoping they’d do,” said Chase after the game.
That should make your stomach churn.
“If you’re not stopping the run and getting off the field, and then not creating turnovers, you’re in a whole world of hurt,” said Watt about the loss. “Just got to watch the film and get better. I’m sure it’s a mix of a lot of things, but we need to solve it quick.”
The issues had better get resolved before Sunday night, as the Green Bay Packers (4-1-1) visit Acrisure Stadium for an 8:20 PM kickoff.
The Packers are 7th in the league scoring 26.3 points per game.
Jordan Love has passed for 1,438 yards, 10 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He’s rushed for 110 yards, and has been sacked 10 times.
Romeo Doubs is the top receiver with 24 receptions for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Matthew Golden is 3rd on the team with 18 catches for 249 yards. Dontayvion Wicks has 13 catches for 134 yards, but he’s out this week. Christian Watson is expected to make his season debut Sunday night.
Tight end Tucker Kraft leads the team with 326 yards receiving off of 23 catches. He’s found the end zone four times. Luke Musgrave contributes now and then with five catches for 49 yards.
Josh Jacobs is a physical back that has rushed for 414 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s been hobbled of late, so he might not be anywhere near 100%. He’s also caught 16 passes for 179 yards. If anything happens to Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson is the next man up with 101 yards on the ground.
“This is not a revenge game for me,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “I’m excited to see some of those guys and be on Sunday night again.”
Though he may say that, you know that Rodgers wants to win this game more than anything right now. One it gets the Steelers back on track, and two… it’s always sweet taking down the team that no longer wanted you.
“He’s the same guy every single day regardless of who we are playing,” tight end Pat Freiermuth said, “but I would imagine all the guys in the locker room understand what it means to him.”
Rodgers play and presence has elevated a once boring and predictable offense.
“Anytime he steps onto the field, he acts like he’s the best player,” wide receiver Calvin Austin said. “We feel that — just him having confidence in himself and who he is.”
For Rodgers to be at his best, his offensive line will have to keep Packers defensive end Micah Parsons from getting to their star quarterback.
“He’s just relentless. He’s a relentless player,” said left tackle Broderick Jones. “He doesn’t stop like most people in the league. It sets him apart because he has a motor about him. He has a deep bag of tools. He has the finesse to his game, too.”
Jones did keep Cleveland’s Myles Garrett sackless two weeks ago. The line as a whole, has improved drastically over the course of the season.
“I feel like we’ve improved week to week, especially the last couple weeks,” center Zach Fazier said. “We’ve gotten better and better, and we just need to keep that going.”
Stay with me here… I know this may sound crazy, but with the embarrassment of last week, combined with a prime time affair going up against one of the other legendary franchises in the league, and for what this game means to their unquestioned leader at quarterback, I see the Steelers playing all out for 60 minutes in this one.
Pride and egos are on the line on defense, and it’s well past time the coaches put their players in position to win, make necessary adjustments, and for those playmakers to elevate their play and earn their damn paycheck.
First and foremost, you have to gang tackle Jacobs when he runs the ball. It would help if certain defensive players would stay in their lanes and just do their damn job. Don’t be a hero. When Love does pass, he has to be pressured and made to be more than just uncomfortable. Hit him, over and over. Be physical, up front, with the Green Bay receivers. Knock them off their routes.
On offense, find balance, and control the clock. Protecting the ball– and Rodgers is a must. You know ARod wants to find the end zone multiple times in this one. This game is personal.
In the end, I don’t care what the score is, as long as it favors the one in black and gold. This team has to bounce back after that brutal loss last week, especially with Indianapolis and the LA Chargers up next. This is a crucial stretch that could solidify Pittsburgh’s grip on the AFC North, or lose it completely.
I like Rodgers and the passing attack to feed off the run game that will be established early with Warren.
Metcalf didn’t get into the end zone last week, but he’ll get one Sunday night, and I expect Freiermuth to pick up where he left off.
It won’t be easy, and it will be a nasty physical affair, but when the smoke clears after this one, the Steelers will stand tall.
